About Us
In 1935 in the Douglasville community of Bay Minette there were 2 baptist churches; the First Baptist Church and the Belmount Baptist Church. They decided to combine and form one new church that would be called the Union Baptist Church. A meeting was held in October to organize the new body and records were filed on Dec. 6th with the Probate Judge's office of Baldwin County to consolidate the churches. The old buildings were torn down and moved by horse and wagon to our present location. Members were asked to donate bricks for the new construction.
Rev. E.D. Womack was selected as the first pastor and the corner stone of the first building was laid in 1937. Our second and third pastors were Rev. A.J. Stokes and Rev. Smith respectively.
In 1957 the church was remodeled and the front entrance was changed from Carroll Avenue to Bibb Street with stairs that rose from ground level to the second floor to the sanctuary.
Our 4th pastor, Rev. J.H. Hale, was called and served from 1958 until 1994. He was a man that greatly loved the Word and the people of God. He licesed and ordained 5 ministers; Rev. James T. Crook, Rev. D. L. Boykin, Rev. Arnold Cox, Rev. Stanley Cox, and Rev. Adam Gatrey. After joining us, Rev. Roosevelt Valree was ordained in 1993. Also, Rev. John Cox,III gave his initial sermon under Rev. Hale's leadership.
On July 25, 1976, we marched into a new sanctuary and sunday school classrooms along with offices were built in 1982.
Due to the illness of Rev. Hale, in 1994, Rev. Valree was elected as interim pastor and subsequently elected to serve as the 5th pastor in 1995. He ordained his son Orlando in 1996.
On May 24, 1997, Rev. Norman Washington was selected as our 6th pastor who served until 2000.
Our 7th and present pastor, Rev. D. L. Boykin, was selected on April 7, 2001. Thus far, Rev. Sean Jackson and Rev. Jerry C. Crook have been licensed. Rev. Donald Taylor and Rev. Larry Anderson have been ordained for service.
Down through the years, Union has been a pillar of the community and many souls have been saved and encouraged in the Christian faith. We are committed to the cause of Christ.
